Catfishgumbo is a gazetteer: an index of places, with the facts that fix each place in the whole. Its subject is Black America — every state, county, and community in this first edition is entered on the same terms: a short portrait, a civic snapshot drawn from the published federal record, the population trend, and the layers of history and institutions that the record supports.

Every figure on every page is cited to its source. The voice is neutral and factual. The first edition covers the South and the Black Belt, where the majority of Black Americans live and where Black settlement is oldest.

Catfishgumbo is a property of Black America Data.
